keilar joins us live from honolulu, hawaii. so a slight bit of news. do tell. >> reporter: i hesitate to even say it's a slight bit of news because it's sort of exactly what we would expect, to be honest. the white house is talking about senate democrats about what senate majority leader harry reid will have to cobble together when the senate reconvenes on the 27th and that's really the last-ditch effort. it's seen as the senate trying to do something that can also pass the house, so this is exactly what you would expect. the real problem though is as of this morning, just a week out from when the fiscal cliff is expected to hit. there's no discussions between congressional democrats and congressional republicans even on the staff level. this is what democratic and republican sources are telling me, and overall just to remind people, instead of this being -- here's what we expect. instead of this being some big bill to try to deal with the long-term fiscal health of the country which is what the fiscal cliff was supposed to be an incentive to do, we're expecting now that this is just

"fox and friends" first starts right now. have a great day. >> julia: good morning. i am julia hedy in from gretchen. last call in hopes of rescuing off of the fiscal cliff. all that is getting debated is who is at fault and what is the president's plan. according to the white house there is no new proposal. >> and is russia vladimir putin playing with children's lives . what he just did. >>> and the newspapers that published the names of licensed gun owners. fox and friend

, treacherous storms pounding the eastern u.s. right now. blizzard conditions from southern illinois across ohio and then to the south, heavy rain in the carolinas and virginia. this is on top of yesterday's mayhem which kicked up about 30 tornadoes. >> oh, my god. we need to be. it's right there. >> this ominous sight was videotaped from the interstate near mobile, alabama. the driver wisely stopped and turned around. i want you to listen to the funnel cloud as it approached the city. >> christmas day tornado. going through mobile. oh, my god, look, that's a tornado. oh, wow. oh, jesus, look at that tornado. >> look at that. it caused a lot of damage. and knocked out power to more than 20,000 customers. incredibly, no one was killed, although at least two storm-related deaths were reported elsewhere. but even nature's most destructive forces can have a beautiful side. the storm generated this end-to-end rainbow as it passed near jackson, mississippi. let's get to alexandra steele. >> the legs on this thing are insane. certainly one for the record books. on the snow side and on the severe side,

the first responders or police. we don't know that either. authorities do tell us they have taken into custody some people they think have knowledge of the situation, so they're trying to figure out how this bizarre scenario unfolded, if this was a trap. the police chief did say in the press conference that of course there will be questions about whether or not an assault rifle was used. he said at this point he does not know and he doesn't know if it was one gun or multiple guns. this is still very much developing, but a tragedy on christmas eve. >> absolutely. thanks, poppy harlow in new york. just as i said, i realize knowing so little, we didn't know if it was a man or a woman. we'll continue to follow that. >>> to texas, two people have died after a car chase ended in a shootout. the pursuit started after a bel air texas police officer tried to pull over a driver who refused to stop. the chase ended up in an auto parts business parking lot where police say the driver shot and killed the officer. and also a bystander. the driver is listed in critical condition at the hospital.
